What's Changing?
EPA27 is a new regulation by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) that is affecting truck specs, inventory availability, production schedules, and truck cost well before 2028 model-year trucks become available. Effective January 1, 2027, nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions will be lowered from 0.2 g/bhp-hr to 0.035 g/bhp-hr. EPA27 also extends the useful life of heavy-duty engines from 435,000 miles to 650,000 miles while emissions related component warranties are increased to 450,000 miles from 100,000 miles.
Why Does It Matter?
Stricter emissions standards, broader testing conditions, and longer service life expectations will shape how new trucks are built, supported, and maintained. For many fleets, that means higher complexity, more pressure on service strategy, and greater importance on choosing the right dealer partner from the start.
Waiting too long can reduce flexibility with pricing, production timing, and spec availability. Whether you run long-haul, vocational, or seasonal equipment, now is the time to evaluate your replacement strategy and prepare for the transition with confidence.
Build a Smarter Fleet Strategy
A strong response to EPA27 doesn’t have to mean rushing into a purchase. It means understanding your options and making informed decisions based on how your fleet operates in the real world.
Papé Kenworth can help you review key planning factors like replacement timing, truck application, financing considerations, and service support so you can move forward with a strategy that fits your business.
The most effective fleets are already taking a closer look at where they may be affected before 2027. That often starts with a review of priorities, including:
- Aging units with rising maintenance risk
- Critical trucks that cannot afford unexpected downtime
- Service and diagnostic readiness across the fleet
With the right planning, you can reduce uncertainty and make your next truck decision with more control.
